Exodus-Map

After watching a documentary about the location of mount Sinai, I tried to find a map of the route Moses took with the Israelites when they left Egypt. Most traditional maps placed mount Sinai in a place that appears highly unrealistic today and more recent research suggest it is placed in Saudi Arabia. The only maps with the new route that I found didn’t satisfy me optically, so I decided to create my own map.

I wanted to show the new route and also give an impression of the terrain to be able to distinguish between mountains and flat areas and valleys.

The used route: http://www.bible.ca/archeology/bible-archeology-exodus-route.htm

This is the map I created…

Map with satellite background

This version shows a grayscale satellite image underneath the route to better understand the landscape. Mountains and valleys are not easy to see though.

A traditional map

This map uses the traditional route. I liked how mountains were shown, they appear as a very simplified relief.

Relief and absolute heights

I created this relief with maperitive and Photoshop. It combines the shaded relief with a color map showing absolute heights. Green and yellow are misleading though because they resemble vegetation and desert.
